It’s been three World Cup’s now since South Africa.

Do you remember any of their official songs? Be honest. Do you even know any of them?

Hayya Hayya (Better Together) is the current world Cup’s official song. ( Yes, I imagine you havn’t even heard of it.) With only 58 million views as of this writing, it’s been a collosal failure so far. Such low numbers even at the height of the international football tournament, show that it might never reach a billion views - the expected figures for an official song for a tournament of that magnitude.

Shakira’s Waka Waka (It’s time for Africa) YouTube numbers currently stand at 3.3 billion views. I imagine they are as huge on other platforms too.

I remember hearing the song being played everywhere in 2010, and even in the subsequent World Cups. A quick visit to its comment section on YouTube shows that the song is still receiving love.

Many commenters have even hailed it as the greatest World Cup song ever. The numbers ofcourse back this claim.

But why is this so?

A global superstar
Shakira is a global superstar. And the huge success of her global stardom might have translated to the great success of the Waka…
