Rest In Peace They Say. Unless You Are An Ancient Egyptian.

The difference between grave robbing and archaeology apparently, is the number of years you wait and a licence.

It’s always a news item attracting camera crews from all over the world whenever archaeologists find new sarcophagi in ancient sites. They dig them up, transport them, study them and open them up to study them some more.

Don’t we know enough about them already? Can we just leave them alone!

Poor ancient Egyptians. They developed such intricate burial techniques and rituals with the intention of living forever, not knowing that forever would be in a display in some museum.

I read that they are even using technology to determine what the ancient Egyptians sounded like back then. Eternity I imagine was definitely not to be a play thing for a smart kid using some venture capital funds in their startup in Silicon Valley.

Forgive me for not getting it, but I do not understand how knowing what a guy that lived 5000 years ago sounded like is useful to society, factoring in the issues we need to be tackling today. Like pollution, extinction of species, global warming etc.

Commercialisation is one of the major reasons for continued excavations in ancient sites.
