Crying At The Work Place?
If we can laugh at the workplace, why can’t we cry too? That’s a question I am constantly asking.
Based on my own observations, women cry more easily and openly than men. I have also seen more women cry at the workplace than men.
Women tend to express their emotions better than men too in my estimation. Because men are socialised to be ‘tough' being raised around statements such as ‘man up’ and ‘men don’t cry' etc, they tend to hold their emotions more than women do.
And workplaces can be full of emotions. The successes, disappointments, and frustrations can bring in ups and downs and the highs and lows of these emotions.
As workplaces are public and official places, many of us are wired to check our emotions while there. Don’t laugh too hard. Or too loud. Don’t jump too high. Don’t stand out too much. Don’t over enjoy work parties and most importantly, don’t ever cry at work!
I have cried at my workplace.
A situation overwhelmed me with sadness and confusion and I burst out in tears. It was met with the laughter of course and I became known as ‘the crier' behind my back.
